I cannot believe that I graduated from nursing school in 2016 and now it is 2019. It feels like just yesterday that I was in my room crying over my first nursing exam, which I failed. Looking back on my nursing school experience, it was rough! But it is doable. Just look at me now.

One of the biggest challenges of nursing school is learning how to critically think and absorb all the material. And just when you think you have mastered nursing upon graduating, you are thrown into the real world with your first job. It is true what they say, you do not learn how to be a nurse until you are working as a nurse.

If you are nursing school right now, I highly encourage you to not give up. I know sometimes you see your classmates doing better than you or you see on Instagram some "influencer" landing your dream job and it can be discouraging. But I want you to remember that you are on your own path and that you can and will survive nursing school. The problem with social media is that it shows you a highlight reel.

For example, I graduated in 2016 summa cum laude from my nursing school, but I was told in my anatomy and physiology course that I was at risk of being dropped from the class if I did not approve after my midterm. I got a C in my statistics course which was my first C letter grade ever. I failed my first nursing exam and would go on to score C's on many more after that. My point is that my schooling was not perfect, but I never gave up. Now I am an oncology certified nurse, which was hands down the hardest test I have ever taken.

Now here are some tips to help you succeed as well:

One// Figure out how you learn best and stick with it. For me, I learned best by handwriting my notes during class and then rewriting them later (usually the next day) and using my textbook to supplement areas I did not understand. Since I knew that I was a kinesthetic learner, I did not bother with recording lectures or trying to draw cute images. I also found that if I just re-wrote my information that it would stick a lot better and thus did not waste my time making flashcards. Do not be afraid to not do what everyone else is doing.

Two// Find a core group of friends or classmates that you can depend on. Having someone to meet with and go over information is critical in nursing school. When you are able to teach someone a concept, then you are more likely to remember information. A group of classmates is also helpful to remind you of when assignments are due or when the next test is. In addition to them becoming your lifeline.

Three// Make use of your professor’s office hours. I think this is the number one mistake nursing students are making. They are not directly going to the creator of your nursing exam for help with understanding a concept or tips or tricks for their specific style of test questions. Not all professors are the same and so one professor may test based solely on what is on the powerpoint while others may not.

Four//  Practice questions! Nursing school exams are challenging because they are unlike anything you may have seen before. Nursing school exams test your critical thinking skills. Thus, meaning you need to understand the content in order to apply it to situational contexts. The best way (and highly recommended) to test how well you are understanding concepts is to take practice questions.
